Summary

One of the most influential books in the history of literature, recognized as the greatest literary masterpiece in Arabic, the Qur'an is the supreme authority and living source of all Islamic teaching, the sacred text that sets out the creed, rituals, ethics, and laws of Islam。 Yet despite the growing interest in Islamic teachings and culture, there has never been a truly satisfactory English translation of the Qur'an, until now。

This superb new translation of the Qur'an is written in contemporary language that remains faithful to the meaning and spirit of the original, making the text crystal clear while retaining all of this great work's eloquence。 The translation is accurate and completely free from the archaisms, incoherence, and alien structures that mar existing translations。 Thus, for the first time, English-speaking readers will have a text of the Qur'an which is easy to use and comprehensible。 Furthermore, Haleem includes notes that explain geographical, historical, and personal allusions as well as an index in which Qur'anic material is arranged into topics for easy reference。 His introduction traces the history of the Qur'an, examines its structure and stylistic features, and considers issues related to militancy, intolerance, and the subjection of women。

Clearly written and filled with helpful information and guidance, this brilliant translation of the Qur'an is the best available introduction to the faith of Moslems around the world。

About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe。 Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more。

There’s a reason I read this right now after it’s been sitting on my shelf for at least 10 years。 There was a Twitter post on a friends timeline that said ‘if we were to start reading seven pages a day starting on or near January 12 we will finish it on the eve of Ramadan, which begins this year on April 12’。 I tried to follow as best I could, there were times I thought I’d be behind, but look I finished a few days early!I’m not going to comment on the book but my journey reading it。 I come from There’s a reason I read this right now after it’s been sitting on my shelf for at least 10 years。 There was a Twitter post on a friends timeline that said ‘if we were to start reading seven pages a day starting on or near January 12 we will finish it on the eve of Ramadan, which begins this year on April 12’。 I tried to follow as best I could, there were times I thought I’d be behind, but look I finished a few days early!I’m not going to comment on the book but my journey reading it。 I come from a long line of Christians and have read the Bible several times。 I knew some of what I find inside these pages but certainly not all, I was excited to learn what was there for me。 Scripture reading is a very personal learning experience。 I was so pleased by some of the language, the way the words gathered to create sentences, and sentences congregated to make paragraphs。 I smiled several times at the simple beauty that I found there。I’ll admit some of it was difficult to grasp。 But for the most part I enjoyed this journey。 I have marked many passages that I can refer back to when needed。This is just a small part of my trying to learn, know, and understand people, religions, and lifestyles that are different from my own, and always being so surprised (and pleased) that we aren’t as different as some would want us to believe。 。。。more

This book can change your life with only a single verse, all the questions and dilemmas might find solution in a single verse! Everybody may say if I had known this before my life would have been different。

It is relatively hard to read the Qur'an as it is organized based on chapter lenghts (assuming this is true in the arabic verion, as the english versin ordering probably bases on the arabic version)。 The first 8 chapters are probably the most influential as they give overview of the how a muslim should live and thus should definately be part of any cultural study or religion educational curriculum。 Given that the Qur'an was the ultimate version of the One God (The bronze age warrior deity who ev It is relatively hard to read the Qur'an as it is organized based on chapter lenghts (assuming this is true in the arabic verion, as the english versin ordering probably bases on the arabic version)。 The first 8 chapters are probably the most influential as they give overview of the how a muslim should live and thus should definately be part of any cultural study or religion educational curriculum。 Given that the Qur'an was the ultimate version of the One God (The bronze age warrior deity who evolved into the monotheistic god of Judaism, Christendom and Islam)。 In the 7th century it, by all means should have been the progressive liberal and most feminist version of the "word of god",defining relatively simple rules for divorce, child support, limiting beating of women etc, which by now sound really obsolescent。 But in case one is not religious the religious texts should always be onsidered in their historical context and also regional context as it is written with the emphasis of the reader being fammiliar with Arid desert climate and relatively low latitude seasonal periods。 And it assumes that society is a male dominated masculine one。As the Qur'an refrences on the Old Testament and also the New testament as basis it probably helps if one has at least basic knowledge of the events in the Old Testament。 Compared to the Old and New testament the text is far more peacful and less vulgar, although the both testaments have been toned down quite bit compared to their original wording。 And the Qur'an is far less a collection of mythological stories as the Old Testment, but a commentary of correct interpetations and guidleine for virtuous living。 。。。more

I have often wanted to read the Koran for a long time。 I think it is good advice to read all of the holy books。 The Old Testament, New Testament and the Koran in order to get a balanced look at all three religions。 The Muslims, The Christians and the Jews。

Well, I technically have read the entire Quran al Kareem, three times in fact, but I don't know what any of the verses mean, let alone the depths of the translation, given that this is in Arabic。 I'm planning to study my Holy Book in as much as depth as I can comprehend at the best university for it when I come of age。 Well, I technically have read the entire Quran al Kareem, three times in fact, but I don't know what any of the verses mean, let alone the depths of the translation, given that this is in Arabic。 I'm planning to study my Holy Book in as much as depth as I can comprehend at the best university for it when I come of age。 。。。more

The Book Of Life❤

I first picked up the Quran when I was 19 or 20, despite being born into a Muslim household。 I was immediately struck by its beauty! I remember being unable to sleep due to awe。 Overwhelmed by its frequent mention of justice。 I couldn't get it out of my head。 That night, I read chapter after chapter in great fascination, wondering how it is that I've been calling myself a Muslim my entire life and never once read the Quran? I've listened to sermons before。 Knew things about some of the prophets。 I first picked up the Quran when I was 19 or 20, despite being born into a Muslim household。 I was immediately struck by its beauty! I remember being unable to sleep due to awe。 Overwhelmed by its frequent mention of justice。 I couldn't get it out of my head。 That night, I read chapter after chapter in great fascination, wondering how it is that I've been calling myself a Muslim my entire life and never once read the Quran? I've listened to sermons before。 Knew things about some of the prophets。 Muhammad, Isa, Musa, Yusuf, Ibraheem, Nuh and Adam, primarily。 I knew a few things about the anti-Christ。 And a few things about the Last Day。 And I've always believed in GOD for as long as I can remember。 Before I even knew what to call GOD, I knew there was a CREATOR without doubt。Upon reading the Quran, it was as if I had known it all along。 Something inside of me knew it and recognized it。When I was l about 8, I saw my first shooting star and someone from amongst us shouted for us to quickly make a wish。 I remember raising my head and saying 'Oh dear GOD' before asking for my heart's wishes。 I thought to wish for something was synonymous with praying。 Just as Ibraheem as a young boy recognized the existence of one GOD from deep within himself, and from the perfection of the world around, likewise everyone is born with such a recognition which is then shaped by our surroundings。 However, that belief I'm GOD never leaves, for it is ingrained within our very being。The matter of atheism is absurd, to say the least。 Never in history has the most foolish of fools ever uttered the nonexistence of GOD。 Polytheism, Zoroastrianism, yes。 The worship of multiple people or things we have come across。 But none has ever refuted worship altogether。 Because worship is in the essence of our creation。How deluded can a person actually be to credit the creation of himself (this incredible body of ours) and the creation of the entire universe (the miraculous nature of it) as merely a thing of chance? Not even the gentle breeze is without cause。 So how can a person dare say the world and everything within it is merely the way it is by chance? That everything miraculously gave itself order。Some people genuinely are confused, and have been taught to hate 'established religion' all of their lives that it's become second nature to doubt。 While others stubbornly refuse to even ponder。 Too busy saving up for retirement to even question their existence and remember their end。 But nature demonstrates that nothing truly ever dies, except that it is transformed into a different but similar form。 Even the cells within our own bodies are recycled to make new cells and serve a similar purpose。 Likewise, death isn't an end。 If our life didn't serve a bigger purpose, then there wouldn't be a need for death。A wise man once said to his children, "If you have doubts about death, then do not sleep, for as you drift off to sleep so too will you die。 And if you have doubts about resurrection, then do not wake up from sleep, for as you suddenly wake up from sleep, so too will you be resurrected after you die。"In the fact that life and death isn't a choice is evidence alone that we do not belong to ourselves, but are rather subjects to a CREATOR。 。。。more

Far from being some singular truthful word of god, rather it is a collection of dozens of variations of the same stories told by different people, with different version of events that more often than not contradict the versions you have read on the pages prior。Given the relative youth of the religion it is surprising the most pedestrian, uninspiring & disappointing of all of the religious texts I have thus far read。

As a rule I don’t rate religious texts like these and am not writing for the personal spiritual content so much as to understand intellectually some of what is happening。I usually read a fair number of secondary sources for things like this, but I only listened to a Great Courses series on the topic。 I did recently read the Bible though and that’s very much an aid to understanding The Qur’an。Perhaps the most obvious place to start is the continuity and discontinuity with Jewish and Christian the As a rule I don’t rate religious texts like these and am not writing for the personal spiritual content so much as to understand intellectually some of what is happening。I usually read a fair number of secondary sources for things like this, but I only listened to a Great Courses series on the topic。 I did recently read the Bible though and that’s very much an aid to understanding The Qur’an。Perhaps the most obvious place to start is the continuity and discontinuity with Jewish and Christian theology。 Hebrew scripture as I understand it is very much a story of a people that are faithful to God and then unfaithful and then are brought back into the fold over and over。 There is a sort of cycling to it, and it ends feeling unfinished。 Christianity of course tries to end this dynamic with a Messiah that Jews don’t recognize。 The Qur’an recognizes Jesus but not as part of the Godhead so much as a prophet。 It so stresses God’s oneness that it demotes Jesus and returns to more rigorous monaltrous Jewish theology。 It actually acknowledges Christian continuity with Judaism but then attempts to be more Jewish than Judaism? It sees Jewish theology as having fallen away and being in need of another restoration。 But there are also many surahs especially early on about how the prophets can serve different peoples。 I am very curious on this point and don’t feel I fully get it。There are also surahs that are very much about tolerance for the people of the book (Jews and Christians) but others that castigate them severely。 There is one near the end of the Qur’an that seemingly puts them on the same plane as the hypocrites and polytheists, which are the archvillains。 It isn’t clear to me what exactly the relationship is between these various people relating to similar source material within the text。The surahs overall are split into Meccan and Medinan surahs, the former being more metaphysical, and the latter being much more on social teaching。 There are a number of retellings or amending or appending or Jewish and Christian stories that are interesting, but the overall tone of the Qur’an is strongly ethical。 So many of the surahs are about what happens to nonbelievers and the unjust and what pleasures await the patient and just。 There isn’t a lot of narrative or history or theology presented (though I am told that more of this is present in the Hadith)。 Hebrew scripture has tons of history and mythology, and the New Testament is quite a lot of theological struggle between various early Christians and the communities they were serving in trying to apply the Gospels。 But it feels more doctrinal。 The Qur’an’s main stress as I read it is God’s oneness, and besides his mercy for the just and fury at the unjust, I am not sure there is a lot of theological fine-tuning being done in here。 I could be entirely blind to it though as a first time reader but that was my take。I suspect I probably missed a great deal but those are my first thoughts on the text。 。。。more
